Meijer
From ArborWiki
Meijer is a massive grocery and department store chain, based in Grand Rapids. Store formats are similar to the younger Wal-Mart chains, featuring not only food and alcohol items but just about anything else you could want, all under one roof---a hypermarket. Most Meijer stores are open 24 hours a day, 364 days a week, closing only on Christmas Day.
There are three Meijer stores in the Ann Arbor area:
- 3825 Carpenter Road, at Ellsworth Road, in Pittsfield Township. Called "Ypsilanti" or "Carpenter Road Meijer". Served by AATA busses 5 and 6.
- 3145 Ann Arbor-Saline Road, at Oak Valley Drive, near I-94, on the other side of Pittsfield Township. Called "Saline Road Meijer". Served by 16.
- 5645 Jackson Road at Zeeb Road, in Scio Township. Called "Zeeb Road" or "Jackson Road Meijer". Not served by any bus.
For more information on these and other locations, including pharmacy hours, see the Meijer.com store locator. For more information about the Meijer company, see the Wikipedia entry or Meijer.com.
[edit] History of the name
A former name for the Meijer store chain is Meijer's. Although the possessive was dropped in 1966, many people still use it, as with other businesses named for people, such as "Ford's".
An earlier name was Meijer's Thrifty Acres, which got remixed into Meijer's Shifty Takers.
