[edit] street formats
street info is really piling up. might be a good time to consider standardizing the format of the street pages themselves. i can envision an html solution, but i don't think a mediawiki template is going to work. any thoughts? from what's been accumulating so far, a solution needs to accommodate:
- cross streets
- street sides
- upstairs/downstairs locations
- location history
- optional short location description
- maybe building name
i'll ponder it while i'm really afk. Dirt 10:45, 29 Dec 2005 (PST)
It's handy to have the sections be named after streets, so that you can refer to an intersection as [[State Street#Hill Street]] and get the expected results. Ed
- I agree that the cross-streets as sections thing does it pretty well for me. The TOC automatic inclusion of sections makes street/page navigation pretty easy.
- Street sides - maybe we use a two-column (tabular) layout so that things on opposite sides of the street can actually be across from each other? Wiki tables are kind of a pain, though.
- "location description" and "building name" seem like they ought to be kind of the same thing? more than a few words, and the description needs a page of its own, linked to by place/building name. (For example, one could mention on the Maynard Street page The Collegian Building, with the training salon on the first floor - any discusison of the building would go on the Collegian Building's page.)
- Maybe all location history ("previouslYy") should be relegated to the page about the location/building? Since a lot of buildings are named after the first use or the builder ("The Pretzel Bell Building"), history's already starting in the name.

Addendum: as a test, I converted the cross-streets on Main Street to hash-pipe notation (tee hee) - instead of making the section name "Huron Street", make it "Huron Street#Main_Street|Huron Street". That way, when you click through to Huron Street, you'll be looking at the point on the Huron Street page where Main Street intersects. See what you think.

I've created a template to denote intersections. For Murph's example above you would use {{intersection|Huron Street|Main Street}} to get Huron Street at Main Street (see David Allmendinger for an example using First Street at Washington Street) --George 16:48, 30 Dec 2005 (PST)
