My Own Best of Ann Arbor List

  • Best Comic book store
    • Vault of Midnight. Totally awesome selection; could dump significant fraction of my paycheck there weekly.
  • Best Burger
    • Haven't found a restaurant yet that beats purchasing 4 1/2lb grass-fed patties for $6 from Knight's Market and just cooking them yourself 'low and slow' @ home with a little garlic powder and soy sauce. (yes Banfields, I'm talking about you - medium means there's still pink in the middle and what, you can't put a little salt on the thing?)
  • Best Fries
    • Haifa Falafel. Great sandwiches too (get the falafel in a wrap not a pita). Rays Red Hots (nee Red Hot Lover) still has great waffle fries but you get only a tiny bit for $3 now (and the hotdogs are $3.50!?!?), better bargain at Famous Hamburger which just opened on Plymouth - skip the lame-o burger tho.
  • Best Restaurant
    • Earthen Jar. You don't even need to know what it is; just fill your plate with everything labelled 'very spicy'
  • Best Park for Walking with or without your dog
    • Barden Nature Area. Honorable mention to Bird Hills.
  • Best Biking
    • Central campus, across, around and thru the Quad. Awesome.
  • Best Scones
    • Sparrow Meats and Produce - don't know where they get them, but they're flakey, sweet, totally awesome after 20 secs in the microwave, and they're only a buck!
  • Best Jazz
    • Waaaah! Firefly closed! *Now* what do I do?
  • Best 3am Pizza
    • Used to be called NYPizza, don't remember new name.
  • Best Indian Buffet
    • Madras Masala; never disappoints
  • Best Chinese Food
    • Tk Wu - skip the Americanized choices and pick from the Chinese menu; the double-cooked pork is indescribably good.
  • Best Coffee
    • Cafe Ambrosia. And if you bring your own container they'll fill it for 73 cents.
  • Best Deli Counter for Meats
    • Copernicus Market -the spicy salami and smoked ham is awesome (and schway cheap)
  • Best Cheese Counter
    • Much love to Morgan and York where I almost ALWAYS leave with some amazing new cheese I would never have found on my own.
