Library Presents Ypsilanti Songwriting Festival ‘08

YPSILANTI, MICH – The Ypsilanti District Library invites all song lovers and songwriters to the Second Annual Ypsilanti Songwriting Festival on Saturday, October 18, 2008. YSF’08 features the wildly talented Jon Langford and Paul Burch in conversation and performance and a Beat poetry session with the legendary John Sinclair and friends.

Schedule a Session with a Songwriter 11 am – 4 pm YDL-Whittaker Rd, Small Conference Rooms Sign up for a one-on-one mentoring session with a local songwriter. This year’s songwriting mentors are Sean Rogers, Dan Florida (aka Almus Magnus), Patrick Elkins, and Holly Mae. Call (734) 482-4110 ext. 1301 to register for a session.

5 pm Kick Out the Jams: Two Generations of Beats from Motown to Woodstock, featuring John Sinclair, Professor Louie, Miss Marie, and M. L. Liebler YDL-Whittaker Rd., Community Room Blending poetry with jazz, blues, and American Roots music, Jazz Beat poet legend John Sinclair (of MC5) teams up with fellow Motown Poet Laureate, writer and performer M.L. Liebler; Woodstock Records artist Professor “Louie” (musician/singer of The Crowmatix and The Rick Danko Band, and producer of several CDs by The Band); and Miss Marie of Brooklyn, New York in this program that blends poetry with jazz, blues, and American Roots music.

6 pm Songwriters In Conversation Local radio host Martin Bandyke of Ann Arbor’s 107one leads our special guest songwriters Jon Langford (founder of the Mekons – a band Lester Bangs called “the most revolutionary group in the history of rock’n’ roll” and Waco Brothers) and Paul Burch (called “one of the most promising singer-songwriters on the cutting edge of country” by The New York Times) in a lively discussion on the craft of songwriting. 9 pm Live! It’s Saturday Night . . . in Ypsilanti Join the YSF’08 finale featuring live performances by Patrick Elkins, Jon Langford, and Paul Burch at the Corner Brewery at 720 Norris Street in Ypsilanti.
