Spam protection

The main page is under regular hits from spammers, often predictable ones - it would be good to reinforce the shields. Edward Vielmetti 14:05, 23 May 2006 (PDT)

MattH - I think I showed you a while back $wgSpamRegex, which rejects matching edits. (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Anti-spam_Features#Example_.24wgSpamRegex_setting). I'd say matching a "d-splay:none" would probably get all the edits I'm reverting these days? -M.

Events

What MedaWiki needs is a way to markup and automatically aggregate events posted on separate pages. -MattH

New stylesheet

I've cleaned up the standard MedaWiki MonoBook stylesheet to focus more on the text and less on the 5,000 control links on each page. Category pages are looking better (example: restaurants). Street pages also look a bit more street-like, too (example: Liberty Street). Are there any other ways we can make the layout fit the information? Let me know. -MattH 12:00, 20 September 2006 (PDT) ([email protected] +jabber)

Matt, I really like the placement of the "contents" as a sidebar, rather than atop the body, as on the streets. Well played. --Murph 19:53, 22 October 2006 (PDT)

Wow!

This is a wonderful new stylesheet. Could I trouble you, once again, to make this available to the New Orleans Wiki? I'm sure that is GNU, but I just want to ask. Thank you.

Ypsiwiki and Restaurant Listings

Prolific restaurant poster here.  ;-) I've been avoiding Ypsi restaurants because you're just going to move them to YpsiWiki, which defeats the purpose of having an open source listing of area restaurants because you have to look TWO PLACES when you want to go out to eat. Which is really annoying. But if you're merging stuff from YpsiWiki back in, I fully support that and will start adding some in Ypsi. What's it going to be?

Hiya, prolific restaurant poster! I was the (sole?) person demanding the creation of an YpsiWiki, and, since I've decided that I've also been responsible for 90% of the YpsiWiki content, and that merging it back in would increase Ypsi representation - such as your contributions - I think that you can safely put Ypsi info on ArborWiki. I offered a chance to object on YpsiWiki before I started moving pages over, and got no response whatsoever. I don't think that YpsiWiki ever served as a significant local data source, due to lack of participation; I consider my ego-trip separate wiki over, and don't expect any resistance to merging - except among folks who didn't use YpsiWiki even when it existed. So, go nuts!

--Murph 19:50, 22 October 2006 (PDT)

OK, cool! I understood the intent, I just don't want Ypsi's restaurants to be invisible to Ann Arborites (especially since my favorite Mexican places are out there...) -- Restaurant poster (I suppose I should get a login, but since I won't get credit for my previous work anyway, why bother...)

(Speaking of which, please roll Taqueria La Loma back over to ArborWiki. Thanks!

time zone?

what official do I have to bribe to get the ArborWiki onto EST? More of a convenience factor than a real issue :) --BrianKerr

Arborwiki domain names

I registered arborwiki .com and .net 1 year and 3 days ago. They've expired, but i could pay them up and transfer them to you, or just keep them parked away from the squaters. What to do? --Dirt 16:42, 30 December 2006 (GMT)

  • Thanks lots for keeping track of them! I'd be happy to pay if you'd renew and transfer them. -MattH 17:21, 30 December 2006 (GMT)
  • Ok, i paid them up, unlocked them and sync'ed the contact info with arborwiki.org (Marga Hampel, mahatma at gmail). If you/ someone had access to that email account, you can transfer away. $20 can be paypaled to [email protected] or via http://monkey.org/pay. Thanks! --Dirt 00:06, 3 January 2007 (GMT)
    • Thanks lots! I've sent in $20 through /pay. It may be 2 weeks or more before the actual domain transfer happens, since I'm still working out a better system. If you are uncomfortable, you can re-lock the domains and I can email you when we're ready. -MattH 03:56, 3 January 2007 (GMT) (that was me)
      • No prob, and no rush - i doubt anyone will do the forgeries required to steal them. You have 363 days to do the transfer. --Dirt 02:44, 4 January 2007 (GMT)

Contact information needed

I am working with Evolved Media Network and Wiley Publications Inc. on the book Wikis for Dummies. I have searched this site looking for some sort of contact information and cannot find any. We would like to use a screenshot of this site as an example under "Community Wikis" and need to contact a responsible person to get written permission. I would greatly appreciate being contacted: Deb Gabriel [email protected] 814-353-0443 Thank you so much,

Catetgories

Someone somehow seems to have done something to merge Category:Restaurants and Category:Restaurants and other eateries. Could someone do whatever it was to categories "Athletic Campus" and "Athletic campus"? Surprisingly enough, they're separate, they both have stuff in them, and despite adding a redirect, they don't seem to be cross-pollinating. . . . --Juicy 16:20, 1 Mar 2006 (PST)

Okay, how do you talk about categories and link to them without including the current page in them? Even pipe-linking 'em doesn't seem to do much. Juicy 16:22, 1 Mar 2006 (PST)

[[:Category:Foo]] - include a colon before "Category" in the link. Also, redirects to categories don't work because the redirect will only show the article text and not the list of articles in the category. --George 05:15, 2 Mar 2006 (PST)

Press Release

Our PR Director has written a press release for local media. Comments are welcome! -MattH 16:39, 3 Jan 2006 (PST)

Features

How about a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly/yearly/centuryly changing featured article on the front page, like the Wikipedia and numerous knock-offs? It might also be helpful to feature a stub and encourage people to contribute to it. I would nominate Lunch under 5 dollars as the first featured article. --George 13:43, 24 Jan 2006 (PST)

  • Great idea. I'll quick whomp up a div and some CSS. -MattH 13:55, 24 Jan 2006 (PST)

Templates, and differences to Wikipedia

I've brought over Template:Lowercase and Template:Selfref templates from Wikipedia, for use in articles like getDowntown. . . . There seem to be some differences between Wikipedia and ArborWiki which make them not want to work quite in the same way---using default values for a parameter in t:L seems to have an interesting effect---but I think they work now. -- Juicy 13:01, 25 Feb 2006 (PST)

Thanks for creating those templates too. FYI, ArborWiki is running an older version of MediaWiki than the 'pedia, so you can't rely on things that work there working here. --George 09:46, 26 Feb 2006 (PST)

  • I'm back from spring break, so soon (aka this week) I'll try and get through my ArborWiki todo list, which I've been neglecting. I'll make an attempt at upgrading then. Thanks for all your contributions & patience -MattH 12:18, 5 Mar 2006 (PST)
    • Well, I've tried to upgrade twice now, and both attempts have failed horribly (database restore! whee!). But I think I've got the issue pinned down, and I'll try one final time later this week. -MattH 09:22, 19 Mar 2006 (PST)

Smoke-Free Bars?

Are there any smoke-free bars in Ann Arbor?

Go, ArborWiki, go!

Wowsa - 250 edits in the last four days! We're almost getting to the point where it's generally useful! :) --Murph 14:45, 30 Dec 2005 (PST)

  • Also, 1000+ total edits, and 200+ articles! -204.38.4.80
  • This is just my opinion, and others may not agree, but. . . . if we want this thing to be "generally useful", then a lot of attacky and just plain childish bits have got to go ("Soviet Krogers"?). I've done a lot in the last couple days, but I don't know how long I can keep this up. . . .

Also a suggestion: templates. I've tried to make the US-23 and I-94 articles follow as close to the same format as I can, but templates---especially for things like the pages for the streets, and for buildings, would be extremely handy. I have no idea how these would be set up, but I imagine Wikipedia:Help has some information somewhere. . . . Juicy 08:07, 25 Feb 2006 (PST)

Images Needed!

If you have pictures, any pictures at all, we could certainly use them! A panorama or other encompassing view of downtown would be great on the frontpage. Also: if you want, you can tag pictures on Flickr as ArborWiki. That way we / I / whomever can assume permission to upload/use them here. -MattH 14:47, 25 Dec 2005 (PST)

If you see pictures on Flickr that you want to include here, ask the photographer for permission to upload them - thanks. Ed 27 Dec 2005

Domain names

this looks like the place for metatalk.

i noticed arborwiki.com and .net are uinregistered. a squatter robot is likely to pick them up soon and hold them for ransom. might be worth buying them up. Dirt 10:36, 27 Dec 2005 (PST)

dirt, if you buy them up, I'll chip in to help pay for them. Ed

done. i registered them through monkey, so $10/each/yr. hapy to transfer them where ever when ever if needed. Dirt 11:17, 27 Dec 2005 (PST)

  • Wow, thanks! Good catch. My budget was around $0.00 when this started, and I forgot until now. I can give you DNS info when you're back. -204.38.4.80 14:12, 27 Dec 2005 (PST) (whoops, that was me, MattH)

Front Page Broken

The front page breaks oddly when my screen width is too low. The right column floats right, but below the left column. UA: Safari 2.0.2 on OS X 10.4.3 --Georgehotelling 13:36, 18 Dec 2005 (PST)

  • I'm taking it back to the old layout b/c it doesn't compress well in FF or IE either. -MattH 14:16, 18 Dec 2005 (PST)
  • This looks like a job for CSS3 Columns --Georgehotelling 17:39, 18 Dec 2005 (PST)
    • Yes, but viable support is years away. Anyways, that's a totally different discussion. There's a workable solution. -MattH 18:47, 18 Dec 2005 (PST)

Caching Problems

There are some caching problems. This means that edits might not show up right away after you press "save page". Hold shift and press the refresh button to force a reload. I'm looking into the problem.

  • It doesn't seem to be happening as much anymore. Caching isn't on in the config. -MattH 14:17, 18 Dec 2005 (PST)

Spam

The spam is ridiculous. You may want to look at enabling mod_security. Here's a rule that would block all of the spam that I've seen so far (with a little help from the mod_security rule generator:
SecFilterEngine On
SecFilterScanPOST On
SecFilterSelective "POST_PAYLOAD" "style=\"over---: auto; hei---: 1px;\"" "deny,,status:412"
--Georgehotelling 08:36, 26 Dec 2005 (PST)
  • I've added something similar to the MediaWiki config file. It works: I tried to post a spam edit with the overflow / height properties and was blocked. Thanks! -MattH 09:40, 26 Dec 2005 (PST)
    • (I also had to censor your post) -MattH 09:40, 26 Dec 2005 (PST)
  • Cool, that should cut down significantly on the amount of WikiSpam. Thanks! --Georgehotelling 11:16, 26 Dec 2005 (PST)
  • Well, it looks like the spam bots are changing. It's hard to filter and easy to adapt. Does that seem right to you? -MattH 08:04, 27 Dec 2005 (PST) (watching too much Firefly)
  • I like to think that it's just different spam bots and we would be getting the new WikiSpam anyway, but at least we're not getting the old stuff too. --Georgehotelling 10:49, 27 Dec 2005 (PST)
