Applied physics doctoral student Shawn Grannell studies the potential of ammonia as an alternative (to petroleum) fuel. As a result of his thesis on the subject, and at the urging of one of his dissertation committee, he converted a Chevy S-10 pickup into what is believed the first ever ammonia-fueled automobile, and set off on a cross-country demonstration trip on Tuesday, July 31, 2007. The truck can convert seamlessly between any blend from 100% gasoline to 80% ammonia/20% gasoline.
