Sara Krulwich was a student photographer for the Michigan Daily who became the first woman on the field of Michigan Stadium in 1969. She is a photographer for the New York Times.

My first act of civil disobedience remains one of the most important days in my life. It was the moment that convinced me to make photojournalism my career. I learned that it takes a certain kind of personality to risk arrest on your 19th birthday in front of 100,000 people in order to shoot a photo assignment. I also learned that if you turn out to be that kind of person, being a newspaper photographer is the best job in the world.
