Hard boiled Ann Arbor Noir Nazi steam tunnel fiction from 1943Ross Macdonald is the pseudonym of the American-Canadian writer of crime fiction Kenneth Millar (December 13, 1915, Los Gatos, California - July 11, 1983, Santa Barbara, California). He is best known for his highly acclaimed series of hardboiled novels set in southern California and featuring private detective Lew Archer.
He wrote The Dark Tunnel, a 1944 Nazi noir thriller set in the steam tunnels of the fictional Midwestern University in the town of Arbana, while working on his Ph.D. in literature at the University of Michigan.
