Red Berenson is coach of the University of Michigan hockey team.

No, for that you have to go back to 1984, coach Red Berenson’s first season behind the Michigan bench. The Wolverines were drawing the smallest crowds in the history of Yost Arena, just three thousand a night – not even half the capacity. Berenson was so desperate to increase the crowd, on Friday afternoons he would walk up State Street to the Diag with a wad of tickets for that night’s game, and actually try to give them away. More surprising: it didn’t work.

"All" also includes a three-year playing career at Michigan (1959-62), a 17-year NHL playing career (1962-78) with the Canadiens, Rangers, Blues and Red Wings, and an NHL coaching career from 1978-84, including three years as coach of the Blues and two with Buffalo as an assistant. And those 27 years at the helm of one of college hockey's most dynamic programs.

His decision to return next year for a 26th season came as little surprise this week when athletic director Bill Martin announced a rolling one-year extension was added to a three-year contract set to expire this year.

Former Michigan athletic director Don Canham had tried to recruit Berenson to coach his alma mater twice before. But it was not until 1984 that Berenson took the job.
