In 1973-4, McD's built a restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor, near campus. It was controversial, as an old building had to be torn down to build it. After it opened, a group calling itself the "Radical vegetarian league" staged a "puke-in" during lunch hour; they drank mustard water and generally made a mess of things. Anyway, the city fathers for sure weren't going to let them put the golden arches in this architecturally sensitive part of town. The design that won approval was vaguely romanesque, with a big stained-glass window up front with the Golden Arches etc. in it.
