Omar Hashwi is the 2012-2013 vice president of the Central Student Government. He and his running mate Manish Parikh were elected in the March 2012 student government elections, which was one of the most competitive and contested student government elections in recent history. During the election, Hashwi was the subject of an e-mail sent to members of the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority before going viral among University students.  It accused him of being anti-semitic and a homophobe, but Hashwi and Parikh refuted the claim and went on to win the election. In an editorial, The Michigan Daily wrote that "these accusations [from the e-mail] were baseless and inflammatory" and that "when this type of sensationalized rhetoric is passed around as fact, it’s essential that students speak out against it." Leibach herself wrote in an e-mail interview to The Michigan Daily that she never meant to "offend or insult anyone" and that she was "deeply sorry if my (e-mail) resulted in anyone's hurt feelings or caused any personal harm."

Hashwi was an LSA representative on the Central Student Government from 2010-12 and received the most votes in the 2011 election for LSA representatives,  of which there were 21 seats up for grabs.
