Obituary
Larson, Melvin Leo Ann Arbor, MI Age 83, passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2010. Melvin was born December 24, 1926 in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Edgar R. and Hazel E. Larson. Mel graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls in February 1945. A veteran of WW II, he was inducted into the Army in February 1945 and completed basic training at Ft. Knox, KY. Mel served in the Signal Corps until 1946 where he served as a Technical Sergeant, stationed in Shanghai, China. He married Bonnie Jean Maguire on December 24, 1950 in Missouri Valley, IA. Melvin graduated from Augustana College in 1950 and earned a M.S. in Organic Chemistry from the University of North Dakota in 1952. Mel worked until 1981 as an organic chemist with the Ethyl Corporation and Climax Molybdenum Company where he developed 35 patents related to his research. Melvin was an active volunteer in the Ann Arbor community where he was instrumental in developing the Thurston Nature Center in 1966, and devoted the next 25 years caring for the preserve. Mel served as assistant Scout Master for Troop # 23 based out of the First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor from 1966 to 1969. Mel was passionate about many social causes such as affordable housing, assisting the homeless, Neighborhood Senior Services, and was a member of the Gray Panthers. He served as a volunteer for the VA Hospital from 1997 to 2004 and touched many hearts. Mel authored a book of poems and short stories, entitled "Days Forgotten", published in 2006. Mel truly had compassion for others and left the world a better place for all. His love and devotion towards his family will be remembered by his wife of 59 years, Bonnie; his son, Mark, son-in-law, Tom Judit; his grandchildren, Josh Judit, Jeff Judit, and Brad Larson as well as great grandchildren, Shelly Ann, Carly, Benjamin, and Anna Judit. Mel was preceded in death by daughter, Amy, who passed away in 2000. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will occur at a later date.
