Carolin, Laurence Ann Arbor, MI

Laurence Carolin, age 15, humanitarian and philanthropist, passed away on Friday, January 15, in his Scio Township home. Laurence was diagnosed with an inoperable, malignant brain tumor in December of 2007, which changed his perspective on his place in the world. He made it his priority to raise awareness about the importance of eliminating extreme poverty and preventable disease. He was inspired by the band U2, especially lead singer Bono, whom he had the chance to meet at a concert in Chicago in September of 2009. Because of Laurence, tens of thousands of dollars have been raised by members of the Dexter and Ann Arbor communities, including his school district of Dexter, to benefit the United Nations Foundation, which uses its funds to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in Africa. The Make-A-Wish Foundation donated $5,000 on behalf of Laurence's wish, to the United Nations Foundation. Laurence's other passions included his gift for cooking, playing soccer, and playing electric guitar. Laurence, who is survived by his mother, Lisa Carolin, of Scio Township, and his father, Patrick Carolin, along with step-mother Susan Carolin, step-sisters Jessica and Rachael Davis, and half-brother Joseph Carolin, all of Newbern, Tennessee, was adopted when he was five-months-old from South Korea. He is also survived by his grandmother Maryann Carolin, of Pittsfield Township, grandfather Jim Lavalley of Newbern, TN and Grandparents Morton and Judith Cohen of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. There will be a non-religious life celebration service (as per Laurence's request,) at the Nie Family Funeral Home, Liberty Road Chapel, 3767 West Liberty Road, just west of Wagner Road, where the family will receive friends from 12 noon until the time of service at 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 24, 2010. A Catholic funeral service will be prayed at the new St. Joseph Church, 6805 Mast Road, Dexter Township where again the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010.
