The early January 2014 winter storm brought almost a foot of snow to the area, followed by bitter cold. Here are some impacts of that weather, as of 9 January 2014.
Homeless shelters

e to homeless encampments. Some residents of these encampments were housed in temporary hotel rooms. - The Delonis Center opened a day shelter, and eased its restrictions on use of the shelter by the intoxicated.
School closings
- All county school systems were closed January 6-8 because of snow and cold
- Ypsilanti Community Schools is closed January 9 due to burst water pipes.
- Lincoln Consolidated Schools is also closed January 9 due to water damage.
- Happy's Pizza in Ann Arbor burned down, with firefighters fighting the blaze in subzero temperatures. (Photo needed)
- A fire at Green Baxter Court displaced residents of six units.
Burst pipes
- Von Maur closed temporarily in Briarwood Mall due to water damage.
- The Cranbrook Whole Foods had water damage.
- Some residents of East Quad were displaced due to water damage.
- About two dozen residents of Oxford Residence Hall had water damage.
- Some apartments in University Towers were damaged by water.
- The Ann Arbor Rec and Ed program was displaced by water damage.
- A water pipe broke in the gym and athletic offices at Skyline High School.
- East Hall had flooding on the 4th floor.
- North Quad had a water main break on the first (Lower Level) floor.
- Water damaged Holmes Elementary and YCS Middle schools in Ypsilanti.
- Courthouse Square had water damage.
- No Thai suspended delivery services because of icy roads, and temporary closed its Kerrytown store because of roof leaks.
Water main breaks
- A water main break in the Burns Park neighborhood.
- A water main break at Red Oak and Mixtwood.
- A water main break on Green Road between Plymouth and Green Court.

Roads
- Many area roads were slippery and icy, as the temperature was too low for salt to melt the snow and ice.
- After the temperature warmed up into the 30s, snow-covered roads became ice-covered roads.
General amusement
- Hell froze over.
