Kales, who owned the Waterfall Supper Club restaurant in Ann Arbor and Pier 23 in Whitmore Lake (now the Whitmore Lake Tavern), played football, wrestled and ran track in high school while growing up in Wisconsin, but didn't have time for sports in his adult life.
