A PhD graduate of the University of Michigan, Herbert M. Slauson (1853 - 1936) was a lifelong educator and served as Superintendent of Ann Arbor Public Schools beginning in 1898. Additionally, he served with the Committee on Simplification of Spelling with the National Education Association, circa 1902.

Herbert also served as Alderman, 1st Ward in Ann Arbor in the 1920s.

Slauson Middle School in Ann Arbor, Michigan is named for Herbert and opened the year after his death.

Herbert and wife Clara (Conover) are buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Ann Arbor.
