The Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake is a sluggish, slow-moving poisonous snake found throughout lower Michigan. It is rare throughout its range and is protected in Michigan.

Thompson's 54-acre donation is located on a tributary to Iron Creek—which makes it ecologically significant to water quality as the creek is in the River Raisin watershed. The property is also a habitat for the Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake, which are a rare find in Michigan due to habitat loss.
