Obituary

Highly respected lifelong Ann Arbor resident and nationally known animal advocate, Doris J. Dixon, passed away on December 10, 2010, at the age of 85, in her sleep at Saline Evangelical Home. Doris was the daughter of Robert J. Schumacher and Zena Mae Lisle Schumacher. Her father was from the Ann Arbor Schumacher Hardware family, which at one time filled three storefronts on Main Street. She had a brother, Robert F. Schumacher, who preceded her in passing. She is survived by her son, Barton Todd Dixon of Ann Arbor. Doris, a 1943 graduate of Ann Arbor High School, headed the Michigan Office of Cleveland Amory's The Fund For Animals for over 30 years, and was also retired from Washtenaw Community College. Having served on many humane boards, on one of which she shared a membership with Doris Day, she received awards for her lifetime work by the Michigan Federation of Humane Soci-eties and Animal Advocates. In 2005 she also became a field services representative of the Humane Society of the United States. She was proud of the strong hand she had in helping to defeat Proposition 3 in 2006, which kept the hunting of mourning doves illegal in Michigan. Doris had a deep spirituality that embraced all life and will be remembered by the many students she taught, and by many friends here and throughout the country. Memorial contributions may be sent to The Fund For Animals at their national headquarters, 200 W. 57th Street, NY, NY 10019 or The Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L Street NW, Washington, DC 20037. Memorial services will be held on a date to be determined.
