Revision 1 (March 19, 2006, 7:49 p.m. by None)

A cooperative is a form of non-profit business - owned by its members (who are individuals or other organizations), a cooperative exists to provide a service to those members. What surplus exists at the end of a business year is returned to its members as a patronage refund, in proportion to their use of the business.

Ann Arbor has a number of these organizations, ranging from grocery stores to institutional buying clubs.
