David Allmendinger founded the Ann Arbor Organ Works in 1872 in his home on the northwest corner of Washington and First Streets. Allmendinger's reed organs and pianos were sold all over the country until displaced by phonographs for home entertainment. It changed its name to the Ann Arbor Organ Company after 1895, and closed around 1915 due to competition from low cost mail order suppliers like Sears, Roebuck.
