Absalom Traver (b. 1800, New York City) settled in Ann Arbor in 1830. He purchased 160 heavily wooded acres in Lowertown from a Mr. Wilcox, and built a small saw mill in 1834. The timber from this land was used to build University Hall in 1841.

Absalom Traver, whose name is associated with Traver Road and Traver Creek, bought land in the area in 1830. In 1837, he platted Traver’s First Addition to the City, which consisted of 67 lots along both sides of Broadway beginning north of Traver Creek. Traver situated his gristmill just north of this juncture. He platted Traver’s Second Addition in 1856 comprised of much of the land north of Maiden Lane.
