After Michigan's 80-79 overtime win over Seton Hall in the 1989 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Game, wild celebrations involving an estimated 5,000 rowdy fans took place on South University Avenue that included flipping over cars and swinging from live power lines.

It took riot-equipped State Police, Washtenaw County deputies, city police and security officers from the University of Michigan until about 4 a.m. to control the situation. In total, eight students were arrested.
